Investments in security guarantee deterrence

Poland - Ministry of National Defence

20.05.2025

The more we invest in our security, the more we spend on equipping our Armed Forces, the more we will deter those that wish us harm. We spend more not to participate in wars, but so that there are no wars in the first place. I would like to state very clearly that we are arming ourselves to deter, to make it so no one can ever afford to attack any European Union or NATO state - said deputy prime minister W. Kosiniak-Kamysz while he was in Belgium.

On 20 May this year in Brussels, Władysław Kosiniak - Kamysz, deputy prime minister - minister of national defence took part in the session of the Foreign Affairs Council - Defence.

- We are talking about spending. This is a very important topic for Poland. Poland is arguing for increased security spending, for European Union and NATO defence. For us, this is fundamental. Poland is the leader in defence spending. This year we will reach 4.7% of GDP for that. This is how we have planned our budget. Last year, as the Alliance's reports showed, we broke absolute records in this respect. Other countries are following our lead. (...). Europe has woken up. We can plainly see a change of behaviour on this topic. The new security programmes that the European Union is adopting are evidence of this.

- said the minister of national defence.

The ministers of defence have also talked about supporting Ukraine, which is defending itself against Russian aggression. Secretary General of NATO also participated in this discussion.

- The other thing is supporting Ukraine. As the European Union, we are united. (...) We call for an unconditional ceasefire. This is repeated by the Ukrainian side. Ukraine's minister of defence Umerov was in contact with us today. The call for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire on sea, in air and on land is still a call that needs to be repeated.

- said the deputy prime minister.

The minister of national defence also addressed the transformation of the Polish Armed Forces, using experiences from the war in Ukraine and priorities in acquiring modern equipment.

- We are talking about drones and anti-drone systems. This is that specific element that we will implement from the experiences of the war in Ukraine. This is why we have opened the NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Center in Bydgoszcz. This is the only institution connecting Ukraine to NATO and NATO to Ukraine. It is placed in Poland. This has only become possible when we have began to govern in our country. We have opened this institution in January. We are implementing experiences from the war in Ukraine into our security strategies. I can see three main things that we will be implementing, and are implementing already. These are drones and anti-drone systems, electronic warfare and satellite imagining

- said the deputy prime minister.
