Today 28 March, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna met with Georgia's fifth President Salomé Zourabichvili in Tallinn to express continued support to the president who is standing up for Georgia's democracy and integration with the European Union.

Foreign Minister Tsahkna told President Zourabichvili that Estonia was watching with increasing concern how Georgia's ruling party Georgian Dream (GD) was undermining democracy in Georgia, and that Estonia would continue to actively support the democratic forces of Georgia. "Estonia keeps the spotlight on Georgia in the European Union and we have imposed sanctions on 83 Georgian citizens who are responsible for repressions in Georgia," Tsahkna told the president.

"Continued repressions, police impunity and silencing the civil society are only a few examples of the actions by the Georgian ruling party in recent years, leading the Georgian society away from the path to the European Union," Tsahkna said. He also noted that the ruling party's new laws targeting the free media and today's reports of a ban on opposition parties were extremely disturbing.

Georgia's fifth President Salomé Zourabichvili was in Tallinn on 27 and 28 March and in addition to the foreign minister, she also met with President Alar Karis, President of the Riigikogu Lauri Hussar, Chairman of the Riigikogu's Foreign Affairs Committee Marko Mihkelson, and the Estonia-Georgia parliamentary friendship group.
