MANILA -- President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday swore in the newly-appointed members of the Parliament of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA), urging them to continue the region's path toward peace, self-governance, and long-term development.
In his message, Marcos underscored the vital role of the new BTA members in shaping the future of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and reinforcing their responsibility to uphold peace and development.
"To my fellow government workers in the Bangsamoro, you pledged to uphold the trust of your constituents. You will carry the aspirations of those who have longed for peace and self-governance," he said.
"You will be instrumental to create a future built by and for the Bangsamoro people," he added.
"Nakataya ang inyong mga pangalan at ang pag-asa ng ating mga kababayan sa inyong sinumpaang tungkulin. Huwag nating makakalimutan na ang inyong tungkulin ay para sa isang mas makatarungan at mas maunlad na Bangsamoro (Your names and the hopes of our countrymen are at stake in your sworn duty. Let us not forget that your duty is for a more just and prosperous Bangsamoro)."
The President acknowledged the region's history of conflict and division, before stressing the importance of moving forward.
"With you at the helm, I am confident that you will continue to prove that the implementation of every single signed agreement is a step towards long-lasting peace," he said.
Marcos also highlighted the collective responsibility of both the national and regional governments to protect the progress made in the Bangsamoro peace process to ensure the region's "uninterrupted advancement."
The Chief Executive also took the opportunity to emphasize the nation's diversity, stating that despite differing faiths and histories, unity should prevail.
"Like the many rivers flowing through Mindanao, our people have followed different paths. Some are shaped by the call to an afternoon prayer. Others heed the ringing of church bells. But just as these waters converge, so too we can move harmoniously together," he said.
Marcos further said the shared desire for peace and progress is the foundation of the nation's identity.
"At the center of our national identity is a common thread that binds us: our longing for peace and for progress," he said.
Marcos also led the breaking of the fast or the Iftar, a celebration in solidarity with the Bangsamoro community as they observe the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Also in the gathering are members of the Cabinet, members of the Diplomatic Corps, and international peace partners.
Marcos recently appointed Abdulraof Macacua as Bangsamoro Interim Chief Minister. He will lead BARMM until the winners in the region's first parliamentary elections are proclaimed after the October elections. (PNA)
