MANILA -- Major assets of the Philippine Army (PA) including its newly acquired Sabrah light tanks and ATMOS 155mm self-propelled howitzers will take part in the live-fire phase of Combined Training Exercise "Katihan" which will take place at Camp Edwin Rabina Air Base, Capas, Tarlac this Friday.

Army spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala, in a message to the Philippine News Agency Thursday, said the March 7 live-fire drills cover "Battle Period 2" of "Katihan" exercise which is scheduled from March 3 to 12.

"Assets to be used are Sabrah light tanks, ATMOS 155 howitzers, and small arms," he added.

Incidentally, the Sabrah light tanks, armed with 105mm guns, will be used for the first time in this scenario, Dema-ala said.

These tanks were acquired by the PA from 2023 to 2024 as part of its modernization program.

However, the PA spokesperson did not give the exact numbers of the participating assets for safety and security reasons.

Dema-ala said Friday's live-fire drills will test the PA's ability to "prevent physical occupation of our land and to be able to push back any potential adversaries."

"This exercise (will) demonstrate our enhanced capabilities to defend our territory through coordinated combined arms operations in realistic scenarios" he added.

Dema-ala also said the live-fire drills will also showcase the PA's readiness to repel territorial threats aside from featuring synchronized ground units executing the Army's Land Defense Concept with "precision and tactical proficiency." (PNA)
