February 27, 2025

On Thursday evening, President Gitanas Nausėda and Prime Minister Dick Schoof of the Netherlands discussed by telephone the most relevant security and defense issues.

The President expressed his sincere gratitude to the Netherlands for its significant contribution to the security of the Baltic region. He highlighted the Netherlands' participation in the NATO enhanced forward presence (eFP) mission in Lithuania, its contribution to the Baltic air policing missions, and its active role in the NATO enhanced vigilance activity Baltic Sentry, to which the Netherlands contributed warships. President Gitanas Nausėda also expressed his hope that the Netherlands will return to Lithuania in 2025 with Patriot air defense systems, further strengthening the collective defense of the region.

The meeting also discussed the support provided by both countries to Ukraine. The two leaders agreed on the need to respect Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity and to provide it with long-term security guarantees. They also underlined their unwavering support for a strong sanctions policy against the aggressor Russia and for accelerating Ukraine's integration into the European Union.

Preparations for the NATO Summit in The Hague in June this year were also discussed. President Gitanas Nausėda emphasized the importance of fulfilling previous commitments and strengthening the transatlantic bond. Lithuania will continue to increase defense spending to 5-6% of GDP between 2026 and 2030 and encourages NATO allies to do the same.

At the conclusion of their conversation, the two leaders reaffirmed the strong partnership between Lithuania and the Netherlands and their commitment to working closely together to further strengthen European and transatlantic security.
