MANILA -- The Japanese-supplied surveillance radar to the Philippines is providing an important contribution to Philippine air defense, Japan Defense Minister Gen Nakatani said on Monday.
Nakatani held a bilateral meeting with Department of National Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. at Makati Shangri-La Hotel.
He said he was able to gauge the usefulness of the Japanese radar systems following his Sunday visit to key Philippine military installations, including Basa Air Base in Floridablanca, Pampanga and Wallace Air Station in San Fernando City, La Union, where a Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO) FPS-3ME fixed radar system is now operational.
"With regard to this visit, I first visited Basa Air Base and Wallace Air Station yesterday with Secretary Teodoro. I was able to actually feel the great role that the Philippines plays in this region, including the South China Sea. In particular, I was very encouraged by my close observation that Japanese air surveillance radar systems are making an extremely large contribution to the air defense of the Philippines and the peace and stability in the South China Sea," he said in a media briefing.
He did not give specifics on what these contributions are due to the highly confidential nature of radar systems and their operations, aside from security reasons.
This system was commissioned in December 2023. Another two FPS-3ME radar systems are expected to be delivered soon.
Meanwhile, a mobile MELCO TPS-P14ME radar system was delivered and commissioned in April 2024.
The contract for all of the equipment is worth PHP5.5 billion. (PNA)
