MANILA -- The Philippines and the Czech Republic reaffirmed their growing defense ties as Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. met with Czech Defense Minister Jana Černochová at the Makati Shangri-La on Thursday.

This meeting is in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to deepen the country's defense cooperation.

"During their bilateral discussions, both defense chiefs reaffirmed the enduring ties between the Philippines and the Czech Republic, which date back to the establishment of diplomatic relations on October 5, 1973. The meeting also marked the first official visit by a Czech Defense Minister to the Philippines, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Manila during World War II," DND spokesperson Assistant Secretary Arsenio Andolong said in a statement.

The meeting of the two defense officials highlighted the resumption of the Philippine-Czech Joint Defense Committee (JDC) that was convened on Feb. 5, 2025.

"Both parties recognized the JDC as a crucial mechanism for enhancing defense cooperation, particularly in capability development, training, and defense industry collaboration," Andolong said.

During the meeting, Teodoro provided updates on the security situation in the South China Sea (SCS)/West Philippine Sea (WPS).

He also reiterated the Philippines' commitment to a peaceful resolution of disputes through diplomatic channels, saying continued aggression in the SCS/WPS poses a threat to regional peace and stability.

"Secretary Teodoro also discussed the Philippine Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC). He emphasized the importance of investing in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Modernization Program, supported by strategic financing packages and international partnerships," Andolong said.

Discussions also covered the Self-Reliant Defense Posture Revitalization Act, with the Philippines seeking like-minded partners to strengthen its defense industry and enhance domestic defense capabilities.

Both sides explored avenues for enhanced cooperation in cybersecurity, focusing on skills development, and the exchange of best practices in addressing hybrid threats and disinformation campaigns.

"Concluding the discussions, Minister Černochová reaffirmed the Czech Republic's commitment to deepening defense cooperation with the Philippines. Both sides expressed optimism that continued dialogue and collaboration would contribute to regional and global security, resilience, and stability," Andolong said.

Peaceful, credible polls

As this developed, the AFP reaffirmed its commitment to secure the May 12 polls this year and ensure that the elections will be peaceful, credible, and orderly as directed by the Chief Executive.

"Recognizing the critical role of the AFP in safeguarding democracy, we stand ready to uphold the integrity of the electoral process, free from threats, intimidation, and violence. Our forces will work closely with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and other concerned agencies to guarantee that every Filipino can exercise their right to vote in a secure and fair environment," it added.

As a professional organization, the AFP said it remains non-partisan and upholds its loyalty to the Constitution and the Chain of Command.

"We will not allow ourselves to be used for any political agenda and will remain focused on our sworn duty to serve and protect the Filipino people," it added.

The AFP also echoed the President's call that "we cannot fail" the Filipino people.

The Armed Forces also said it remains steadfast in its duty to defend democracy, protect the sanctity of the ballot, and maintain stability before, during, and after the elections.

"To the public, we call for vigilance, cooperation, and adherence to lawful and peaceful means in this democratic exercise. The AFP will not waver in its resolve to preserve peace and order, ensuring that the nation moves forward with unity and stability," the AFP said. (PNA)
