Activities and Meetings of the Minister of Foreign Affairs on the First Day of Participation in the Munich Security Conference

Minister of Foreign Affairs Emil Hurezeanu attended on Friday, February 14, 2025, the opening of the International Security Conference in Munich, which occasioned a series of bilateral meetings, as well as actions of notable interest for the Romanian diplomacy.

The Romanian official's program included participation, as a key speaker, in the event "A Free and Open Black Sea: Evaluating Challenges on Connectivity, Global Food Security and Energy in the Region", hosted by the New Strategy Center and the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA). He highlighted the strategic importance of the Black Sea both in terms of ensuring Euro-Atlantic security and facilitating connections between Europe and Asia. At the same time, he pointed out the further deterioration of the security situation in the Black Sea region, amid Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.

The Romanian dignitary presented the regional projects and initiatives designed to contribute both to the security of the region and to capitalizing on its potential in terms of connectivity. He underlined the importance of cooperation at European and Euro-Atlantic level to achieve these goals, including through the continuation of a robust NATO presence in the Black Sea, the adoption of an EU Black Sea Strategy and the full implementation of the US Black Sea Strategy.

Regarding the series of bilateral talks, the Minister of Foreign Affairs had a meeting with the new Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Development Cooperation of Belgium, Maxime Prevot. Both sides highlighted the Romanian-Belgian cooperation in the field of security, with the Romanian official reiterating the Romanian side's appreciation of the Kingdom of Belgium's contribution to the strengthening of the security of the Eastern flank, through the presence of troops in the NATO Battle Group in Cincu.

Minister Emil Hurezeanu also had a meeting with the new Bulgarian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georg Georgiev, during which the very good bilateral relations of Strategic Partnership were commended. Issues of priority interest on the bilateral agenda were addressed, such as interconnection projects, streamlining of border traffic and expansion of economic and sectoral cooperation.

During the dialogue with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, Hakan Fidan, the Romanian official appreciated the substance of the political-diplomatic dialogue and stressed the importance of developing economic cooperation, which is one of the pillars of the bilateral Strategic Partnership. The meeting provided the framework for an exchange of views on topical issues of the international and regional agenda, with a focus on the security situation in the Black Sea region.

The Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs also had a meeting with representatives of the US Congress, namely with a delegation from the House of Representatives consisting of Mike Rogers, Brian Mast, Joe Wilson, Dan Crenshaw, Steny Hoyer, Chrissy Houlahan. Minister Hurezeanu conveyed Romania's assessments of the security situation in the Black Sea region and the solutions envisaged by our country to promote the mutual interests of Romania and the US. He thanked the US Congress for its continued support in developing a US Black Sea strategy. He presented the advantages of the Romania-US Strategic Partnership for managing the regional and global challenges faced by both countries and stressed the importance of maintaining transatlantic unity.

The Romanian minister's schedule also included a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates of R.A. Egypt, Badr Abdellatty. The dialogue covered the broad spectrum of bilateral cooperation, with an emphasis on political-diplomatic, economic, commercial and cultural relations. At the same time, the two officials exchanged views on the security situation in the wider Middle East.

The Romanian official also had a meeting with the leader of the Belarusian opposition, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. He expressed Romania's concern about the intensification of political repression, intimidation, arrests and sentences against the media, activists and civil society as a whole in Belarus. The Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs mentioned the importance of the unity of the Belarusian opposition in exile and the need for coordinated action to promote the democratic aspirations of Belarusian citizens.

Minister Emil Hurezeanu also had a meeting with the Executive Chairman of the American Jewish Committee, Ted Deutch. The Romanian official reaffirmed Romania's constant commitment in terms of assuming the past, rejecting and sanctioning any form of anti-Semitism, as well as condemning the denial and distortion of the Holocaust.

The Romanian minister's programme also included a meeting with a group of veterans from the Ukrainian front. On this occasion, the Romanian dignitary expressed appreciation for the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian army and the Ukrainian people, reaffirmed Romania's solidarity with Ukraine and reiterated Romania's commitment to continue its multidimensional support to Ukraine.

On the margins of the official activities, the Romanian Minister had a meeting with family members of Israeli hostages in the Gaza Strip.
