MANILA -- Philippine Army (PA) commander Lt. Gen. Roy Galido on Thursday said the death of ranking New People's Army (NPA) leader Myrna Sularte, alias Maria Malaya, will help bring peace and progress not only to Mindanao but also to the rest of the country.

"Her neutralization is the most sought-after justice of the loved ones of those countless innocent Filipinos whose lives were wasted as a result of the CTGs' (communist terrorist groups) deceptive, futile, violent, and self-serving power struggle to undermine the country's democracy," he said in a statement.

Sularte, secretary of NPA's Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee (NEMRC), was killed in an encounter with soldiers in Barangay Pianing, Butuan City on Wednesday, according to the Army's 4th Infantry Division.

"She was the wife of the former CTG's National Operations Command (NOC) and Komisyong Mindanao (KOMMID) terrorist leader, Jorge 'Ka Oris' Madlos, and the successor of the former top CTG leaders, Wilma and Benito Tiamzon, the PA also neutralized in legitimate combat operations," Galido said.

The PA chief added that Sularte's neutralization marks the "new era and a beacon of hope" in the quest for lasting peace and genuine progress.

"Let this be a pivotal step towards true healing and reconciliation as we reaffirm our commitment to serving the people and securing the land," he added.

The Army chief, meanwhile, thanked the Filipino people and sectors of society who embodied the "whole-of-nation approach" to end this decade-long communist terrorism.

"Likewise, this represents the sacrifice, and heroism of every member of the PA, especially those who serve in the country's conflict-affected and geographically isolated areas. Congratulations to the troops for a job well done!" he added. (PNA)
