On Sunday, President Gitanas Nausėda, together with Polish President Andrzej Duda, Estonian President Alar Karis, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, announced the successful synchronization of the Baltic States' electricity systems with the continental European grid at a joint press conference.
"Moments ago, I received great news. The synchronization of the Baltic States' electricity system with the continental European grid has been successfully completed! This is a historic moment marking the end of a long journey for Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. From now on, we have achieved full energy independence. The era of political pressure, blackmail and sabotage is finally over," the President declared.
Gitanas Nausėda thanked the Presidents of Poland, Estonia and Latvia for their excellent cooperation and the President of the European Commission for her strong support in making the synchronization of the Baltic States a reality. He emphasized that achieving full energy independence was the result of the collective efforts of many individuals, including current and former heads of state, politicians, diplomats, engineers, technicians, and other dedicated professionals.
"Now it is time to secure our achievements," the President stated, calling for decisive action at the EU level to strengthen the resilience of critical infrastructure. He stressed the need to focus on Russia's hybrid attacks, protect key infrastructure and take measures against Russia's so-called "shadow fleet," which, according to the President, must be sanctioned and its movements restricted to the maximum extent possible.
Gitanas Nausėda also underscored another strategic goal: the construction of the Harmony Link electricity interconnection between Lithuania and Poland by 2030. "Lithuania appreciates the EU's political support and funding, and we will spare no effort in finding solutions to accelerate the project," the President emphasized.
