On Sunday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with Polish President Andrzej Duda, Estonian President Alar Karis, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to mark the start of the synchronization of the Baltic States' electricity systems with continental Europe.

The five-party meeting focused on strengthening European Union's defense, protecting critical infrastructure, advancing strategic projects, enhancing EU-NATO and EU-US cooperation, and mobilizing support for Ukraine.

According to President Nausėda, following the synchronization of the Baltic electricity grinds, a key common objective is to ensure the smooth and successful operation of the system while increasing the resilience of critical infrastructure. To safeguard strategic energy assets, close regional cooperation and EU support are essential.

The meeting also addressed the Rail Baltica project. The President emphasized the project's significance for the region, particularly for military mobility, and highlighted the importance of implementing this and other joint military mobility projects.

Leaders also discussed EU-NATO cooperation and a coordinated response to Russia's hybrid actions.

Regarding the strengthening of EU defense and cooperation with the US, the Lithuanian President stressed the need for a significant increase in security and defense funding, with priority given to the EU's eastern member states - both for improving infrastructure connectivity, enhancing military mobility and developing the defense industry.

All leaders agreed on the importance of ensuring stable and substantial military and political support for Ukraine, prioritizing continuous arms deliveries, air defense and Ukraine's integration into EU supply chains. President Nausėda underlined that any agreement on the outcome of Russia's war against Ukraine must be made with Ukraine and in full respect of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
