MANILA -- The Philippine Air Force (PAF) and the US Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) inaugurated a newly completed fuel storage facility at the Brig. Gen. Benito N. Ebuen Air Base in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu on Thursday, highlighting the strong military alliance between the two nations.
The USD2.7-million project funded by the US government under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) features two above-ground storage tanks, each with a capacity of 75,708 liters.
"It also features a modern fuel handling system, a covered parking area for refueling trucks, and a secured perimeter, designed and constructed compliant to security and safety standards," PAF spokesperson Col. Ma. Consuelo Castillo said in a statement.
It was constructed by Himalayan Builders and Engineers Pvt. Ltd. and ACE Builders.
The project started on June 22, 2022 and was completed on Sept. 6, 2024.
PAF Air Mobility Command chief Maj. Gen. Ramil Oloroso and PACAF commander Gen. Kevin Schneider graced the facility's blessing and turnover rites.
"This project, undertaken under the EDCA, will significantly improve the PAF's fuel storage and distribution capabilities, enhancing operational readiness and logistical efficiency," Castillo said.
She added that the facility would also support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations, strengthen national defense capabilities, and sustain a wide range of PAF flying missions, including airlift, internal security, and territorial defense operations, reinforcing the Air Force's ability to respond to various operational demands.
Oloroso, in the same statement, said the new facility would bolster the PAF's ability to effectively carry out its missions.
He expressed his gratitude for the continued support and partnership with PACAF and for the completion of the EDCA project, which remains instrumental in facilitating cooperation in HADR operations aside from strengthening the country's defense capabilities and promoting regional security. (PNA)
