RAMSTEIN, Germany -- The 26 January, 2025, marked the tenth anniversary of the Spanish deployment of Ground Based Air Defence systems under the NATO Support to Türkiye mission. Spanish troops have been stationed in Adana, Türkiye, with a PATRIOT Battery since 2015 under Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) operational command and Allied Air Command operational control.
This milestone signifies the unwavering commitment by Spain over the last ten years, completing 21 replacements and deploying almost 3,000 Spanish military personnel. "Türkiye's defence is also Spain's defence" said Mrs. Cristina Latorre Sancho, Spanish ambassador, "You represent the inherent values that Spain and NATO hold dear and solidarity with our Allies" she added.
NATO Support to Türkiye Mission augments Turkish air defence capabilities, through the PATRIOT ground-to-air guided missile defence system. This system is integrated into NATO air defence network and contributes to protect the Turkish population and territory.
The mission began in 2013, with the Spanish deploying in 2015, following the decision of NATO Foreign Ministers to accommodate the request for support made by the Turkish government. Initially US, German and Netherlands PATRIOT batteries deployed to protect against the missile threat posed during the war in neighbouring Syria.
The continued operation of the Spanish PATRIOT Battery over the past 10 years has been made possible thanks to the cooperation of Türkiye as Host Nation, together with the support provided by the 39th Air Base Wing of the United States Air Force. This combined collaboration underscores the bonds of friendship between Allies and reaffirms their commitment to the Alliance and its values.
"We thank the Spanish people for their response when we were in need, and we look forward to continue this friendship and collaboration" stated Brigadier General Kemal Güleç, İncirlik Air Base Commander.
The Spanish unit continue contributing to air defence for the south-eastern city of Adana. The Alliance remains fully committed to the defence of Türkiye as well as all other NATO Allies.
