On 16 January, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Kęstutis Budrys, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Emil Hurezeanu. The Foreign Ministers of Lithuania and Romania discussed bilateral cooperation, security and defence, and joint actions in support of Ukraine and Moldova.
At the meeting, the head of Lithuania's diplomacy underlined that Lithuania is interested in deepening cooperation with Romania on political and security issues. Budrys and Hurezeanu discussed the protection of critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, hybrid operations and acts of sabotage by hostile countries on NATO territory.
"Lately, we have witnessed an increase in Russia's attempts to organise provocations, destabilise societies and interfere in democratic processes in Western countries. We need to boost NATO's defence capabilities and strengthen resilience," the Minister said.
The Foreign Ministers of Lithuania and Romania discussed the situation in Moldova. According to Budrys, it is essential to consistently support Moldova's European integration aspirations, help implement reforms and withstand Russia's pressure through disinformation and energy blackmail. The Foreign Minister underlined that Lithuania is ready to continue supporting Moldova and sharing its experience and expertise in the field of European integration.
The Foreign Ministers also discussed preparations for the NATO summit in The Hague and further steps by Allies to strengthen NATO's eastern flank. Budrys also stressed the need to continue to stand united in our support for Ukraine, seeking a sustainable, lasting peace.
