President Gitanas Nausėda, together with the Heads of State and Government of the Nordic and Baltic countries, has today appointed the former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to prepare an independent report with policy recommendations aimed at advancing Nordic-Baltic security and defense cooperation.
Mr. Stoltenberg will analyse and present recommendations on how to enhance the regional cooperation to further strengthen the region's deterrence and defense. The report will primarily focus on military defense, along with measures to counter Russian sabotage and other hybrid threats.
"With Finland and Sweden joining NATO, the Nordic-Baltic region, as well as the whole Alliance, has become more united and resilient than ever. Without delay, we must harness the potential of this collaboration. The security situation in our region is increasingly affected by Russia's war in Ukraine. It is vitally important.to strengthen our deterrence and defense while further enhancing the region's strong support for Ukraine," says the President of Lithuania.
The report is scheduled to be presented ahead of the NATO Summit in The Hague in June 2025.
"Mr. Stoltenberg's extensive experience in the Alliance, his deep understanding of its structure and processes, as well as the Nordic-Baltic countries' security cooperation, will undoubtedly contribute to creating an even stronger union among our nations," says President Gitanas Nausėda.
