MANILA -- The military stands undeterred by challenges in asserting the Philippines' sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said Friday.

"In the WPS, the AFP has been undaunted in asserting our sovereignty. With modernized tools and strategic international partnerships, we carry on in strengthening our maritime presence, securing our exclusive economic zone, and upholding the principles of international law," Brawner said in his speech for the military's 89th founding anniversary.

This year's anniversary theme is "AFP@ 89, Sandigan ng Bayan Tungo sa Bagong Pilipinas."

He added that this mission goes beyond defending territorial claims.

"It is about preserving ideals that define us as a nation," Brawner said.

At the heart of this effort to protect Philippine sovereignty in the WPS is the AFP's Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC).

Brawner said the CADC is a visionary strategy that harmonizes the country's military capabilities with the unique geographic realities of the Philippines. He added that this ensures a robust and sustainable defense of the Philippine maritime domain.

"Our pursuit of progress was further propelled by the ongoing AFP Modernization Program, which brought cutting-edge technologies and advanced assets into our arsenal. These upgrades, including enhanced maritime patrol capabilities and advanced surveillance systems, have significantly bolstered our readiness to address traditional and emerging threats. Equally vital is the critical role of our reserve force, which has proven itself an indispensable partner in national defense and humanitarian missions," Brawner said.

With this development, he said the AFP stands as one cohesive force, embodying professionalism and readiness in the face of any challenge.

"The inclusion of new units such as the AFP Cyber Command and the AFP Intelligence Command highlights our adaptability to contemporary threats and underscores their relevance in ensuring the security and intelligence infrastructure of our nation," Brawner said.

Aside from its territorial defense role, the AFP chief said that military personnel from all services have stood at the forefront of humanitarian assistance and disaster response as proven by the recent six typhoons.

"Despite the devastating impact of six typhoons — Kristine, Leon, Marce, Nika, Ofel, and Pepito — making landfall in a span of one month, the AFP mobilized swiftly to protect lives and rebuild communities," Brawner said.

And whether protecting the country's sovereignty or extending a hand in times of need, the AFP chief said the military remains steadfast in our duty to the flag, the country, and the people.

"As we look ahead to 2025, we carry forward the values that define the AFP -- honor, service, patriotism. We will accelerate the AFP Modernization Program, ensuring that our Armed Forces remain capable of safeguarding our nation amidst evolving geopolitical and environmental challenges," he added.

From strengthening its territorial defense to enhancing disaster response capabilities, Brawner said the AFP remains committed to fulfilling its institutional mandate.

"Equally important, we will continue fostering peace and development in conflict-affected areas. By eliminating internal threats and transforming former battlegrounds into centers of progress, we will help lay the foundation for a more united and prosperous Philippines," he added.

This goal is guided by the AFPs' new campaign plan, "Tatag Kapuluan," which envisions a resilient and secure archipelago through synchronized and holistic national efforts.

"To every soldier, sailor, marine, airman, and reservist, your courage, professionalism, and unwavering loyalty inspire the nation. You are the guardians of our sovereignty and the builders of a brighter tomorrow. Let us continue to embody the ideals of integrity and excellence as we work toward a stronger and more capable Armed Forces," Brawner said. (PNA)
