Comments of Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna on US decision to impose visa ban on 20 Georgian people
Republic of Estonia - Ministry of Foreign Affairs
13.12.2024
I welcome the decision of the US to impose a visa ban on almost 20 Georgian government ministers, parliament employees, law enforcement and security officials, and individuals. According to the decision, the US bans the issue of visas to people responsible for or complicit in undermining democracy in Georgia.
Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have published the first list of the sanctioned Georgian leaders, and Estonia is working on updating the lists. The violence aimed by the Georgian authorities against peaceful protesters and journalists is unjustified and criminal.
Estonia, together with other countries, is working to support democracy in Georgia. On Monday, I'll be attending the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union, where one of the items on the agenda will be the latest developments in Georgia. There is no doubt that concerns about the situation in Georgia are growing. I would like to emphasise to my counterparts that concrete action must be taken against those who use unjustified and brutal violence against the Georgian people and undermine democracy.
