MANILA -- The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Thursday backed Senate Bill 2903, which aims to reorganize its ranks and modernize its operational capabilities, especially to address geopolitical challenges in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

In a statement, the PCG said the bill, introduced by Senate President Francis Escudero on Wednesday, would focus on improving operational capabilities, stabilizing personnel ranks, ensuring competitive salaries, and providing adequate provisions for longevity pay.

"These changes aim to attract and retain skilled personnel within the organization, thereby enhancing its effectiveness in safeguarding the nation's maritime interests," it said.

It said the PCG's reorganization is a "critical step" towards strengthening the country's national maritime security.

In his remarks delivered in plenary on Wednesday, Escudero called for urgency in passing the bill.

"The PCG has been around for the longest time. However, it has never been the subject of any modernization attempt, especially given the current issues we face in the WPS," he said.

He said the PCG had to evolve in response to current maritime security challenges. (PNA)
