UNRWA Syria response to the influx from Lebanon - UNRWA Situation Report 4 (14 October 2024)
UNRWA
14 Oct 2024
All information from 10 October - 13 October 2024, valid as of 13 October 2024 at 14:00
Key Points
- As of 13 October 2024, 481 families (approximately 2,400 individuals) of Palestine Refugees (PR) displaced from Lebanon had approached UNRWA Syria, while the overall estimated number of people displaced from Lebanon was approximately 264,000. UNRWA is making continued efforts to liaise with local authorities to assess and respond to the needs of PR living in hosting centers. The number of PR families in these centers who contact UNRWA directly or through the authorities is increasing.
- In an effort to assess the needs of the newly arrived Palestine Refugees and to provide much needed support, UNRWA is conducting home visits in coordination with its government counterpart. Additionally, UNRWA has developed a questionnaire, which is implemented country-wide to assess the immediate needs among the new arrivals. All Palestine Refugee arrivals who have registered with UNRWA Syria across the country have been interviewed by UNRWA to assess their needs and intentions. Out of those interviewed:
- 98 per cent are in immediate need of NFIs (i.e. mattresses, blankets, clothes etc.)
- 98 per cent need food
- 91 per cent need hygiene items
- 79 per cent need clothes
- 36 per cent need items for babies
Overall Situation
- UNHCR reported that Syrian immigration continues to admit the displaced populations flexibly; however, Lebanese immigration has resumed an Exit Stamping Protocol, which may slow down the processing of displaced populations at the border or discourage the use of official border crossings.
- There is an increase in attacks on Syrian Lebanese border crossing points; eight attacks by the Israeli Armed Forces have been recorded, some with significant impact on access to the Syrian territory. Following an Israeli Forces' airstrike near the Masnaa border crossing point last week, an Israeli forces' drone attack hit the surroundings of Hawsh al-Sayyid Ali town in South Rural Homs, destroying an informal border crossing bridge on 12 October 2024.
- UNRWA protection is working to address protection concerns including documentation and to monitor secondary movements. The current trends seem to include an increased number of new arrivals heading towards Northeast Syria where at least 21,000 displaced individuals arrived, while the number of people fleeing Lebanon who crossed through Syria to Jordan according to UNHCR has passed 7,200 individuals.
