UNRWA Syria response to the influx from Lebanon - UNRWA Situation Report 3 (10 October 2024)

11 Oct 2024

Situation in numbers

  • Over 400 Palestine Refugee families, or approximately 2,000 people, have reported to UNRWA in various locations (Damascus, Central, North and South areas). The vast majority have come to Damascus and the surrounding rural area. It is believed that the actual number of Palestine Refugee families who have already crossed the border from Lebanon is higher. Most of those arriving are fromfemale headed households and there are high percentages of family separation.
  • They are largelybeing hosted by relatives and friends, while others temporarily occupy abandoned houses in Palestine Refugee camps which have been damaged over the years of crisis in Syria. This support system is believed to be only available for a limited time and extent, and the new arrivals are expected to revert to UNRWA for support.
  • UNRWA is in the process of re-positioning its stock of 825 non-food item (NFI) kits and 533 hygiene kits to the locations with the highest concentration of new arrivals to support these families, who all report needing NFIs.The distribution is scheduled to start next week.

Funding Requirements

  • UNRWA has launched a Joint Flash Appeal for Syria and Lebanon and requires approximately US$ 1.53 million to respond to the needs of Palestine Refugees fleeing Lebanon in the first three months. Thus far, UNRWA has used its existing programming, budget and human resources to provide protection and services to newly arrived and returning Palestine Refugees who approach the Agency. However, as the number of Palestine Refugees grows, and in view of their dire situation and heightened vulnerabilities, there is an urgent need for additional funding to allow UNRWA to provide adequate assistance and services.
