Comment by Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna to mark one year since the attack by Hamas against Israel.
"Today we mark one year since the brutal attack by the Hamas terrorist organisation against Israel.
It is one of the most appalling terrorist attacks in recent history, killing more than 1100 people, and of the around 250 hostages that fell into the clutches of Hamas, dozens are still waiting for a chance to return to their loved ones one year later. I sincerely hope this will happen soon and I support all efforts by the international community to make it happen without delay. My thoughts are with the victims, the hostages and their loved ones.
There is no justification for Hamas' inhuman terror and I completely condemn this despicable attack. Estonia stands in solidarity with Israel who has a full right to defend itself and its people against terror while strictly following the norms of international humanitarian law.
It is extremely unfortunate that the conflict has only widened since. Early last week, we were witness to yet another missile attack by Iran against Israel and the hostilities of the Hezbollah terrorist organisation have taken the region to the brink of an even greater threat of war.
The biggest victims in the crisis that has erupted in the Middle East are civilians, usually the most vulnerable groups like women and children. More than a million people have fled their homes in Lebanon and northern Israel and the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza is unacceptable.
I support all diplomatic efforts to prevent an escalation of hostilities and bring the Middle East back from the brink.
I stand for finding a permanent solution in the region. I remain convinced that this entails a two-state solution that would ensure Israel's security and give Palestine a politically and economically stable future. This is in the interests of a peaceful future for not only the Middle East but us all."
