On September 13, 2024, Lithuania and Germany took a bold step toward strengthening European security by signing a Defence Cooperation Agreement. This agreement, which will station a permanent German brigade in Lithuania, is a powerful response to the fragile security environment on NATO's eastern flank.
While the significance of this partnership is undeniable, it is also a complex undertaking. Both nations face hurdles in making this large-scale project a reality. Yet, what's at stake is far more than just the future of bilateral relations - it is about safeguarding peace across Europe.
The deployment of Germany's 45th Mechanised Brigade to Lithuania marks a historic first for Germany, signifying a deep commitment to NATO's collective defense. This is not a symbolic gesture; it reflects Germany's recognition of the change in European security architecture. For Lithuania, hosting this brigade demands a major investment in military infrastructure-building the necessary training grounds, housing, and facilities to accommodate 5,000 German troops and their families.
Yet, despite these challenges, much progress has already been made. The first troops have arrived in Lithuania, and the build-up of infrastructure is advancing steadily. In both countries, preparations are well underway. We are on track and aim to complete the project in 2027.
In Lithuania, political unity is strong, with both government and opposition parties fully supporting the project and calling for its swift implementation. This broad backing underscores Lithuania's understanding of the critical importance of this mission. Germany, too, is moving forward, demonstrating leadership and commitment to the project. It is a trustworthy partner.
The stakes extend well beyond the borders of Germany and Lithuania. The security of the entire European continent hinges on the success of this mission. The German brigade's permanent presence in Lithuania serves as a powerful deterrent against potential threats from the East, reinforcing NATO's eastern flank and contributing to the stability of the Baltic region. It also sends a clear message: Europe will not be intimidated by anyone, and NATO remains steadfast in its commitment to defend peace and democracy.
This deployment is more than a military operation - it is a partnership built on shared values and common goals. Both nations are fully committed to ensuring that this project succeeds because they understand that the price of failure would be far greater than the cost of facing the challenges ahead. This collaboration, once fully realized, will serve as a model for NATO.
As we look forward, it is essential to focus on the bigger picture: this mission transcends bilateral cooperation. It is about ensuring that Europe remains a place of peace, freedom, and security. Together, Germany and Lithuania are showing the world that safeguarding peace requires determination, leadership, and the willingness to face obstacles head-on. After all, investing in deterrence is far more effective than addressing problems that arise from indecision and perceived weakness.
Our adversaries may wish for our failure, but we will not let them rejoice.
