Minister of Foreign Affairs Luminița Odobescu delivered a speech at the plenary session of the UN Summit - Summit of the Future on September 23, 2024.

The Romanian official presented Romania's perspective on the implementation of the Pact for the Future, based on the interdependence of the three pillars of UN activity: peace and security, sustainable development and human rights.

Minister Luminița Odobescu stressed that the rules-based international order must remain at the heart of Member States' efforts. She also referred to current global challenges such as climate change, managing the digital transition and misinformation, which require global solutions. All of these elements are essential in the collective effort to meet the needs and aspirations of future generations. She noted that the adoption of the Compact for the Future provides useful guidance for the UN to adequately fulfil its role now and in the future.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Luminita Odobescu also participated in a new G7+ Foreign Ministers' format meeting on support for Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

The event was organized at the initiative of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, with the participation of Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. The meeting discussed the impact of Russia's recent attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and its current state of operation. Urgent needs and priorities for assistance from the international community were discussed as the cold season approaches.

During her intervention, the Romanian official stressed the need to continue international efforts to support Ukraine, highlighting the consistent support that Romania has provided to the energy sector of this state, but also to the Republic of Moldova, since the beginning of the war. She also underlined Romania's commitment to working with international partners to find sustainable and lasting solutions to the effects of the war on civilians in Ukraine.

In addition to the above activities, Minister Luminița Odobescu had a bilateral meeting with her counterpart from the Kingdom of Thailand, Maris Sangiampongsa. The Romanian Minister commended Thailand's decision to include Romania on the list of countries whose citizens can travel without having to obtain an entry visa for stays of up to 60 days. Both Ministers expressed their determination to work together to strengthen Romanian-Thai bilateral relations, both at the political level, through consultations at the level of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, as well as at sectoral level, in areas such as trade and investment, the digital sector, etc.

On the same day, the Minister of Foreign Affairs attended the informal meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Member States of the European Union. The main topics of discussion focused on the stage of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. The objective was to coordinate European positions in the context of multilateral meetings in New York.
