On Tuesday, President Gitanas Nausėda is paying a working visit to Moldova. Together with the Presidents of Latvia and Estonia, the Head of State met with the Prime Minister of Moldova, Dorin Recean. The Baltic leaders and the Moldovan Prime Minister discussed Moldova's integration into the European Union and ongoing reforms, the situation in the regions, and the forthcoming referendum on EU membership.
At the meeting, the Lithuanian leader emphasized that the opening of negotiations on Moldova's EU membership is a significant achievement for Moldova and a recognition of the country's reform efforts. The President noted that the EU accession negotiations are a long and complex process that requires political focus. According to President Gitanas Nausėda, it is important for Moldova to fully implement reforms in the areas of the rule of law, fundamental rights, and freedoms, to transpose EU legislation into national law, and to pay close attention to strengthening institutional and administrative capacity.
"The path to EU integration is not an easy one, but it is worth the effort. Lithuania stands ready to assist Moldova on this path by sharing its experience, expertise, and support in implementing reforms. We have valuable experience in countering hybrid threats, working on strategic communication, and countering disinformation. This is an area where our countries could cooperate successfully," the President said.
The Lithuanian leader expressed support for the EU-Moldova Security & Defense Partnership aimed at strengthening Moldova's resilience and capacity to ensure its security. President Gitanas Nausėda underlined that Lithuania will continue to support Moldova in the areas of security and defense, both bilaterally and through the European Peace Facility (EPF).
The President pointed out that as the elections and the referendum on EU membership approach, Russia will undoubtedly intensify its efforts to spread disinformation and propaganda in Moldova and undermine the country's further integration into the EU by other means. The Head of State stressed that the support of the democratic world is crucial for Moldova in this period, especially in countering hostile narratives, manipulation, and disinformation.
The Lithuanian leader also stated that it is of utmost importance to continue supporting Ukraine in every way until victory is achieved. According to President Gitanas Nausėda, this is essential for ensuring the security of the entire region.
