July 15, 2024
On Monday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with United States Congress Members, Donald John Bacon and Salud Ortiz Carbajal.
During the meeting, the President emphasized the importance of close cooperation between the United States and Europe to ensure security and defense across the transatlantic space. Gitanas Nausėda expressed gratitude to Congress for their support of the Baltic Security Initiative (BSI), highlighting the crucial role of U.S. presence in the Baltics as a deterrent against Russian aggression. He also noted that Lithuania has significantly increased its defense investment, reaching a record high of 3.03 percent of GDP this year with plans for further growth.
The President stressed that strong and continued Western military support for Ukraine is crucial to ending the war, emphasizing that Ukraine's full integration into NATO and the EU serves as a strong deterrent for ensuring peace in Europe.
On the occasion of State Day (Day of the Coronation of Lithuanian King Mindaugas), the President awarded a state decoration to Congressman Donald John Bacon, Co-Chair of the House Baltic Caucus, for his significant contribution to Lithuania's efforts to strengthen national and regional security, and for promoting closer ties between the United States of America and the Baltic States.
