Yesterday 11 July, as part of NATO's Washington summit, Allies held a joint session with partners in the Indo-Pacific region and the European Union, and a session of the NATO-Ukraine Council with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attending.

Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said closer cooperation with both like-minded countries as well as a deeper partnership between NATO and the European Union was of key importance as authoritarian states and non-state actors undermine international law and security architecture.

"Iran and North Korea are providing weapons to Russia, China is helping Russia circumvent sanctions and gain access to the hi-tech it urgently needs to wage war," Tsahkna noted. "In light of this, I am glad that a decision was made at the NATO summit to reinforce security cooperation with our partners in the Indo-Pacific region and give an impetus for a quicker growth of Europe's defence industry capabilities in order to be more prepared to face the hostile actions of authoritarian countries." The minister welcomed the fact that Allies who are also members of the European Union are assuming more responsibility for the continent's security.

In order to enhance practical cooperation with Indo-Pacific partners (Australia, Japan, Republic of Korea, New Zealand), projects in four areas were approved at the summit, relating to supporting Ukraine, cyber and hybrid domains and new technologies.

"Reinforced cooperation allows NATO Allies and our partners in the Indo-Pacific region to give a more effective response to security challenges that are often shared or closely related," Tsahkna said.

At the session of the NATO-Ukraine Council, Allies reaffirmed their unwavering support to Ukraine as the country is bravely fighting Russia's brutal aggression.

"The pledge of NATO Allies to provide Ukraine with military assistance worth at least €40 billion next year allows Kyiv to plan its actions in repelling Russia's aggression," Tsahkna said.

The NATO summit that concluded yesterday also approved actions and recommendations for meeting the security challenges in NATO's southern neighbourhood.
