Ministry of Defence hosts a meeting of the Slovak-Hungarian Joint Commission on Military, Security and Political Issues

Deputy Defence Minister Igor Melicher hosted Deputy Defence Minister of Hungary Zsolt Kutnyánszky for a meeting of the Slovak-Hungarian Joint Commission on Military, Security and Political Issues at the Ministry of Defence in Bratislava today (13 June 2024).

Topics in the spotlight included bilateral defence cooperation and ways to further expand it, the Air Policing (AP) mission in Slovak airspace by the Visegrad Four (V4) Air Forces, and a host of the NATO Alliance's current transatlantic processes.

According to Mr Melicher, meetings of this format not only encourage mutual dialogue and cooperation, but also enable a better understanding of our visions for building a functional and modern Armed Forces.

In his statement, Deputy Defence Minister Igor Melicher said: "This platform has laid a solid foundation for our ongoing and future cooperation in a number of areas such the defence industry and the modernization of the Armed Forces as we identify and explore several more opportunities for cooperation."

In addition to addressing possible collaboration on international crisis management missions and operations, both delegations presented their official positions on the key issues ahead of the upcoming NATO Summit in Washington, D.C.

The Slovak-Hungarian Joint Commission on Military, Security and Political Issues is part of wider cooperation between Slovakia and Hungary. The previous meeting of this format took place in Budapest on 10 March 2022. A series of SVK-HUN joint commissions were established for the purpose of implementing the Agreement on Good Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation between Slovakia and Hungary.
