Deputy Defence Minister Igor Melicher welcomed a United States Department of Defense (DOD) delegation led by Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (DASD) for European and NATO Policy Lisa Sawyer to the Slovak Ministry of Defence in Bratislava today (23 April 2024).
The U.S.-Slovakia High Level Defense Group (HLDG) held a meeting to address issues related to the present developments in the global security environment, including the war in Ukraine, the ongoing instability in the Middle East region, the evolving security situation in the Indo-Pacific, as well as exchanging information on the avenues of cooperation being pursued by the North Atlantic Alliance ahead of the 75th Anniversary NATO Summit on 9-11 July in Washington, D.C.
DASD Lisa Sawyer applauded Slovakia's 20th anniversary as a NATO Ally, its contributions to the NATO Alliance and commitment to deliver the declared goals of defence spending and enhanced security for NATO's Eastern Flank. DEPDEFMIN Igor Melicher underscored the high level of the U.S.-SVK bilateral relationship in the field of Security and Defence and reaffirmed Slovakia's interest in seeking opportunities to take U.S.-SVK Security and Defence cooperation forward - with benefits to both Nations.
To support this aim, the meeting looked at areas of cooperation where our interests converge such as military modernisation programmes, education, training and exercises, military-to-military engagements, and technical cooperation.
Reflecting on the 30th anniversary of the Indiana-Slovakia National Guard Partnership, the delegations expressed appreciation for the benefits of the State Partnership Program (SPP) and their shared interest in developing close defence ties between the Indiana National Guard and the Slovak Armed Forces.
