
Landsbergis: "The deployment of the German brigade to Lithuania will mark a qualitative leap in relations between our countries"

On April 16, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, met with the first arrivers from the German brigade, who came to Lithuania last week. Lithuania's Foreign Minister emphasised that deploying the German brigade to Lithuania was the Government's priority.
"We are grateful to Germany for its historical decision to send a brigade to Lithuania and for a strong partnership that protects your and our freedom. Germany's commitment to permanently deploy a heavy brigade to Lithuania is a true symbol of Zeitenwende," Landsbergis said.
Landsbergis highlighted that Germany's readiness to send the brigade was an important priority for both sides, stressing that joint efforts should focus on implementing a detailed plan for moving the German brigade to Lithuania.
"The deployment of the German brigade to Lithuania will not only change the security situation in the region but will also mark a qualitative leap in our bilateral relations. Cooperation between our societies in science and innovation and cultural, economic, and social fields will also deepen," said the Foreign Minister.
The initial command element of the brigade in Lithuania will first be responsible for planning the brigade's transfer to the new stationing location and coordinating the requirements for military infrastructure. Later, it will assist in moving military personnel from Germany to Lithuania. By the end of 2024, the number of servicemembers of the initial element of the Bundeswehr's brigade in Lithuania is planned to increase to 150.
According to the Action Plan signed at the end of 2023, the brigade is expected to be ready for combat by 2027. Five thousand one hundred members of Germany's military and civilian personnel are expected to move to Lithuania.
