On 11 and 12 April, the Chairman of the EU Military Committee, General Brieger visited Budapest, Hungary.
The focus of the visit was on reinforcing EU defence cooperation under the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), against the backdrop of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and security developments in the Red Sea. The meetings showcased Hungary's substantial role and contributions to the EU's security and defence initiatives, particularly through its active participation in EU CSDP Missions and Operations.
The discussions with the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter SZIJJÁRTÓ, and Minister of Defence, Kristóf SZALAY-BOBROVNICZKY touched on Hungary's upcoming EU presidency program, promising a focused approach on enhancing the EU's defence capabilities, as well as the implementation of the EU's Strategic Compass, an ambitious plan of action for strengthening the EU's security and defence policy by 2030.
One of the spearhead initiatives, the development of the EU Rapid Deployable Capacity (EU RDC), promises to significantly boost the EU's crisis response capabilities. Hungarian interlocutors underlined the importance of advancing EU crisis management tools, enhancing EU capability development through initiatives like the "Brave Warrior" LIVEX exercise in 2024, and fostering a competitive European Defence Technological and Industrial Base (EDTIB).
These discussions highlighted a comprehensive strategy to bolster the EU's security and defence policy. This visit not only facilitated a deeper understanding of Hungary's defence and security perspectives but also reinforced the necessity of a shared defence culture among EU member states and institutions.
The visit was hosted by General Gábor BÖRÖNDI, Hungarian Chief of Defence.
