Today 2 April, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna was in Czechia, where he met with his Czech counterpart Jan Lipavský, Deputy Defence Minister Daniel Blažkovec and Chief of Defence Karel Řehka and Minister for European Affairs Martin Dvořák.
The foreign ministers discussed the hybrid threat posed by Russia. "Attacks by the Russian regime are unacceptable and we must enforce all measures to prevent them," Tsahkna said. "Estonia has made concrete proposals for ramping up measures against Russia."
Tsahkna emphasised that we have a shared view on supporting Ukraine and recognised Czechia for procuring ammunition initiative for Ukraine. "Ukraine needs our help in terms of both military aid and its journey to NATO. Thanks to NATO, where Estonia just celebrated 20 and Czechia 25 years of membership, we have a safe country and region to live in," he said. Tsahkna also outlined Estonia's plan for and progress with using frozen Russian assets.
The ministers also discussed the potential sectors where the two countries could support each other. "We are ready to support Czechia with their digitalisation drive and in the cyber domain, because Estonia has the necessary experience and know-how, and public sector cooperation would benefit both sides," he said. Tsahkna also briefed his colleague on Estonian companies that have shown an interest in reaching the Czech market in this area.
His meeting with Deputy Defence Minister Daniel Blažkovec and Chief of Defence Karel Řehka covered options for increasing and accelerating support for Ukraine, and NATO's Washington summit. Tsahkna thanked Czechia for its contribution to Baltic Air Policing.
The focus of the meeting with Minister for European Affairs Martin Dvořák was on the future of the European Union, mainly enlargement. "We agree that European Union enlargement is of geopolitical importance, and both current and aspiring member states must contribute to its success."
Tomorrow 3 April, Foreign Minister Tsahkna will attend the two-day meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, where the agenda includes preparations for the NATO Washington summit and support for Ukraine. A meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council and a session with the representatives of the Indo-Pacific region and the European Union is also held.
