Today 13 December, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna was on a visit to Armenia, where he met with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Speaker of the Parliament Alen Simonyan, and opened an office of the Estonian Refugee Council.
The meeting with Prime Minister Pashinyan concentrated on the region's security and the peace process with Azerbaijan. "Peace in the region is an essential precondition for further positive developments between the countries and the region more broadly," Tsahkna emphasised.
The Estonian foreign minister recognised Armenia for implementing bold reforms, and for boosting relations and practical cooperation with the European Union. The minister also welcomed Armenia's commitment to reinforcing democratic values.
The meeting with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan covered the humanitarian situation in the country. "Armenia has been good at managing the humanitarian situation that has seen it receiving more than 100 000 refugees," Tsahkna said. "It is important to ensure they cope socially and human rights are ensured," Tsahkna said.
They also spoke about European Union enlargement. Foreign Minister Tsahkna recognised Armenia for supporting Ukraine. "It is crucial that Ukraine wins this war because it would show we live in a rules-based world, which is also the foundation of peace for Armenia and Armenians," Tsahkna said. "The situation in Ukraine has a direct impact on security in the Southern Caucasus."
Tsahkna's meeting with Speaker Alen Simonyan also covered events in the region. Tsahkna noted that in the past year, relations between Estonia and Armenia have become stronger and this is demonstrated by several high-level visits.
The minister concluded the day by opening the Yerevan office of the Estonian Refugee Council, emphasising that Estonia's contribution to helping refugees across the world has been great and it is noticed. "As the foreign minister, I am proud that Estonia has provided strong assistance to people who have been forced to leave their homes. Every person counts," he said.
