The European Union and the Republic of Tajikistan finalised the second full round of negotiations to develop a new comprehensive framework for strengthening their bilateral relations, on 30 November in Brussels.
The negotiations for an Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (EPCA) with Tajikistan represent an important milestone in the EU's relations with the country, with a view to enlarge mutual cooperation in the areas of political cooperation, trade, key economic sectors, as well as governance, rule of law and human rights.
The future Agreement will replace the current Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (in force since 2010). The launch of bilateral discussions on the EPCA negotiations took place in Dushanbe in February 2023 and the first round of substantial negotiations followed in June 2023 in Dushanbe.
The negotiations were led by the Chief Negotiators, Mr Luc Devigne, Director for Russia, Eastern Partnership, Central Asia and OSCE in the European External Action Service (EEAS), and Mr Sodiq Imomi, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan. The negotiations on the trade chapters of the agreement were led by, respectively, Mrs Nele Eichhorn, Head of Unit, DG TRADE of the European Commission, and Mr Dilshod Sharifi, Director of Department, Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of the Republic of Tajikistan.
