On 20 November, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis took part in an informal video teleconference to discuss the situation in Israel and the Middle East region.
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, briefed foreign ministers on his visit to Israel, Palestine, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Jordan. EU foreign ministers discussed the situation in the region, the EU's involvement in preventing the spread of the conflict in the region and relaunching the Middle East peace process.
"Russia seeks to use the situation in the Gaza Strip to spread false and harmful narratives about the West and to strengthen its influence in the Middle East and other regions. The EU must be united, continue its cooperation with the Arab states and the US and seek a more active role in relaunching the Middle East peace process," Landsbergis said.
Landsbergis stressed the need for EU countries to support Israel in the fight against terrorism and emphasised Israel's right to defend itself in compliance with international humanitarian law. The head of Lithuania's diplomacy urged the EU to take additional measures to combat terrorist groups and actively seek the release of hostages.
