Martin C. Faga (June 11, 1941 - 9 October 2023)
Martin C. Faga of Falls Church, VA died on 19 October 2023 due to heart failure. He was 82 years old. Marty is survived by his wife, Barbara; his sister, Betsy; and his sons, Jeff and his wife Kelly and Scott and his wife Martine. He is also survived by grandchildren Courtney, Patrick, Matthew, Rachel, Brian and his wife Gloriana, and Stella.
Marty was born on June 11, 1941 in Bethlehem, PA, the son of the late Corolyn and Edgar Faga. He was raised in Bethlehem, along with his sister Betsy. Faga received master and bachelor of science degrees in electrical engineering from Lehigh University in 1964 and 1963. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He spent six years as a Research and Development officer in the Air Force, after which he worked for the CIA for several years. Marty married Barbara Macklin in 1966, and they settled in the Washington, DC area, where they raised their sons, Jeff and Scott.
In 1976, he joined the staff of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. As a staff member of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence of the House of Representatives, he headed the program and budget staff, rising to become the Staff Director.
In 1989, he was appointed by President George H.W. Bush as Assistant Secretary of the Air Force and Director of the National Reconnaissance Office. Faga served from 1989 to 1993, responsible for overall supervision of service space matters. As Director of the National Reconnaissance Office, responsible to the Secretary of Defense and the Director of Central Intelligence for the development, acquisition and operation of all U.S. satellite reconnaissance programs. During this time, he led the NRO through the First Gulf War and the de-classification of the existence of the NRO.
RADM Dan March noted " Marty taught this cocky two star admiral more about the Intelligence Community and our National Technical Means capabilities in space that I never appreciated as a battle force commander. He demonstrated daily a unique ability to mold disparate organizations, people and capabilities into a lasting intelligence collection capability from space second to none."
Following retirement from government service in 1993, he joined MITRE Corporation as a Vice President. Faga served as executive vice president. Earlier, he was senior vice president and general manager of MITRE's Center for Integrated Intelligence Systems before rising to be the President and CEO in May 2000.
Faga retired as President, Chief Executive Officer of MITRE on June 30, 2006 and from the MITRE Board of Trustees in 2012. He was appointed in 2006 by President Bush to the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board and to the Public Interest Declassification Board. Faga remained as a MITRE consultant. Since retiring from MITRE, Faga served on the Boards of Directors of Alliant Techsystems, and Orbital ATK. Faga was Chairman of the Board of Thomson Reuters Special Services and was a Proxy Holder at Inmarsat Government. He served on the boards of Electronic Data Systems from 2006 to 2008, GeoEye from 2006 to 2013, and DigitalGlobe from 2013 to 2015. He served on numerous other boards and commissions.
Faga was awarded the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal, DOD Distinguished Public Service Medal, Air Force Exceptional Civilian Service Medal and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. In 2004, he was awarded the Intelligence Community Seal Medallion. He was a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers.
Marty loved to sail, and spent many happy hours over many years sailing the waters around Washington and Annapolis. Marty was generous with his time and talents, volunteering and donating to his parish church and other organizations. He also enjoyed mentoring many young professionals in their careers.
