On October 20 a dynamic display concluded the international Exercise Iron Wolf 2023-II. The two-week long exercise took place at the Gaižiūnai and the General Silvestras Žukauskas Training Areas training approx. 3500 troops and 600 pieces of military equipment from across the Lithuanian Armed Forces an 7 other NATO Allies: Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Luxembourg and the United States of America.
"This exercise is an excellent demonstration of the capability that Lithuanian Armed Forces troops are. And also how successfully they are able to coordinate and harmonize their actions with the Allies. As you see the level to which the interoperability between our and Allied forces is honed, you are left without any doubt that the military forces in charge of our security are ready to defend every inch of NATO territory any minute against any threat," says Minister A. Anušauskas who attended the exercise closing event.
Aside from the regular infantry maneuvers, Exercise Iron Wolf unceasingly engages in experiment. The latest exercise tested the principle of split command and control: separated elements of C2 were operating independently from one another at enlarged distances for enhanced security. This also tested communications equipment suitable for longer-distance connection between a brigade and subordinate battalions, trained responding to an UAV swarm, and electronic warfare prevention.
The main stage of the exercise focussed on intense and aggressive defensive training conducted by the Iron Wolf Brigade's Grand Duchess Birutė Uhlan Battalion, General Romualdas Giedraitis Artillery Battalion and the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group in the Red Force role. The exercise also involved units of the National Defence Volunteer Force, Lithuanian Riflemen Union, Air Force, Military Police, General Adolfas Ramanauskas Warfare Training Centre, 2nd Cavalry and 1-9 Field Artillery Regiments of the United States Army.
Exercise Iron Wolf is one of the largest military training events held in Lithuania every spring and fall to certify combat readiness of Iron Wolf brigade battalions.
