Statement by PM's Office Director General Yossi Shelley

Israel - Prime Minister's Office

The 37th Government
10.10.2023

Prime Minister's Office Director General Yossi Shelley, today:

"I would like to clarify my remarks about the party.

In no way did I intend to imply that those present at the party contributed to the results of that tragic event.

The young people who were celebrating, including my beloved cousin Laurie, who was murdered, were celebrating as the Jewish people do on the holiday.

My words referred to the criticism of the time it took to identify the bodies of those who were murdered and the difficulties in identifying them.

Due to the great number of those who were murdered, the difficulty in reaching the bodies in the midst of combat, the long time it took to gather the bodies, and the complicated identification process due to their condition, it was necessary to establish a special procedure, recruit many professionals and pass a Government decision allowing identification by means of the biometric database. All of these actions took time and prolonged the identification process.

If I expressed myself insensitively or was mistakenly misunderstood - I offer my heartfelt apologies."
