As part of his working trip to Germany today, Defence Minister Martin Sklenár visited Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW)'s headquarters in Munich. KMW is a world-renowned manufacturer of artillery, wheeled and tracked armoured platforms, including Leopard 1 and 2 main battle tanks.
The head of the MOD held talks with representatives of KMW over opportunities to take existing cooperation forward. "While working closely with Germany and KMW on repairs of Ukraineʼs heavy military equipment in Michalovce, opportunities are now opening up for further collaboration, investment, and job creation in eastern Slovakia," Minister Sklenár said.
The talks mainly focused on the possibility of servicing and repairing the Slovak Army-operated Leopard 2A4 MTBs directly in Slovakia. The depot-level maintenance and repair could be conducted by state-owned KONŠTRUKTA - Defence. If so, the company would acquire a new capability to service and repair these tanks.
On the possible future arrangements of battle damage repair (BDR) operations for Ukraine in Slovakia, Defence Minister Martin Sklenár explained: "Our German partners and we are discussing the possibility of extending battle damage repair (BDR) operations to cover Ukraineʼs other heavy equipment. Due to the BDR facilityʼs capacity in Michalovce, moving repairs to and centralising them at KONŠTRUKTA - Defence seems to be the best way out, while keeping the whole range of repairs, just as is actually the case."
