Bilateral meetings of Minister of Foreign Affairs Luminița Odobescu on the second day of the high-level week of the UN General Assembly

Minister of Foreign Affairs Luminița Odobescu held a series of bilateral meetings on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, in the context of her participation in the work of the UN General Assembly in New York, as part of the delegation of Romanian President Klaus Iohannis. Minister Luminița Odobescu held meetings with the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Albania, Igli Hasani, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad of the Republic of Senegal, Aïssata Tall Sall, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Communities and Defence of the Republic of Cape Verde, Rui Alberto de Figueiredo Soares; and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud.

During the bilateral discussions, Minister Luminița Odobescu expressed interest in strengthening bilateral political and sectoral cooperation. At the same time, the head of Romanian diplomacy continued to present to her counterparts the security situation in the Black Sea region and near Romania's borders, as well as Romania's support for Ukraine in the fight against food insecurity at the global level, including by facilitating the export of cereals through our country.

During the meeting with the Albanian counterpart, in the context of the 110th anniversary in 2023 of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Romania and Albania, the discussions provided an opportunity to review the agenda of bilateral relations, focusing on the calendar of political and diplomatic actions in the coming period. The good dynamics of the economic component of the bilateral relations and the steady increase in the volume of trade between the two countries were mentioned. Minister Luminița Odobescu commended the official opening of negotiations for Albania's accession to the European Union on 19 July 2022 and stressed the importance of continuing the sustained commitment to the path of reforms. The Romanian side reiterated its willingness to continue to provide relevant expertise in the EU accession process at the request of the Albanian side and mentioned the opportunity to maintain a constant dialogue between experts in order to strengthen bilateral cooperation in this dimension.

During the bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad of the Republic of Senegal, Aïssata Tall Sall, the head of Romanian diplomacy expressed the Romanian side's intention to strengthen bilateral relations, including through high-level contacts, by the end of 2023. She underlined the potential for strengthening and diversifying sectoral cooperation in areas such as education, emergency management and agriculture. Minister Luminița Odobescu reaffirmed Romania's firm commitment to stability and security in the Sahel and acknowledged Senegal's essential stabilising role at regional level.

The bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Communities and Defence, Rui Alberto Figueiredo Soares, was an opportunity to express the Romanian side's openness to relaunching bilateral cooperation between Romania and Cape Verde. Minister Luminița Odobescu also referred to the constructive relationship that the EU has with Cape Verde, based on cooperation and dialogue and developed in the framework of the Special Partnership signed in 2007. In this context, she highlighted Cape Verde's role as a model of development at regional level.

During the bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud, Minister Luminița Odobescu reaffirmed Romania's interest in strengthening the Romanian-Saudi political-diplomatic dialogue, including in regional and multilateral cooperation formats. At the same time, she highlighted the potential for cooperation between the two sides in the economic and commercial fields, which can be exploited at a higher level. The Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed her appreciation for the involvement of Saudi diplomacy in the organisation of the Jeddah meeting, stating that the Ukrainian peace formula is the appropriate proposal for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
