Minister Luminița Odobescu attended the informal quadrilateral meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Romania, Bulgaria, Greece and Croatia in New York on Tuesday September 19, 2023 on the margins of the UN General Assembly.
The main topics of discussion were regional cooperation, including the results of the recent 3SI summit in Bucharest, regional diversification and digitisation projects, and EU enlargement policy.
Opportunities for sectoral cooperation were assessed, in particular with regard to transport and energy interconnectivity. The four ministers also highlighted the transformative potential of the double transition - energy and digital - for the region, which is a key factor in strengthening EU cohesion.
Minister Luminița Odobescu briefly presented the results of the Three Seas Initiative Summit and Business Forum, Bucharest, September 6-7, 2023, as well as the opportunities for increased connectivity that will open up through the implementation of the priority projects promoted under the Initiative.
EU enlargement policy was also on the agenda. Discussions underlined the support of the four countries for advancing the EU enlargement process on the basis of the candidates' own merits in fulfilling their commitments. Foreign Ministers highlighted the importance of maintaining closer coordination at quadrilateral level in order to assist candidate countries in implementing the reforms necessary for the European course.
In this context, the Romanian Minister for Foreign Affairs underlined the significant progress made by Moldova and Ukraine, as candidate countries, in implementing the European Commission's recommendations. She expressed Romania's appreciation for the sustained efforts made by the authorities in Chisinau to implement the necessary reforms, and reiterated Romania's firm and full support for Moldova and Ukraine to advance on the path of European integration, including through the adoption of the decision to open accession negotiations with both countries by the end of this year.
