Interactive Dialogue on the report of OHCHR on Afghanistan

EU Statement

The EU thanks the High Commissioner for his report.

Mr High Commissioner,

Your report outlines the dismantling of institutions in Afghanistan by the Taliban. All safeguards in the legal system have been discarded: the country is ruled by edicts, while judges, prosecutors and lawyers have been removed from the legal system - as have women, who have been erased from all spheres of society.

We call on the Taliban to end all human rights violations and abuses and violations of international humanitarian law in Afghanistan, and underline Afghanistan's obligations under human rights treaties. We urge the Taliban to reverse actions that have resulted in the systematic socio-economic exclusion of women and girls and in the shrinking of civic space, including media freedom.

An inclusive political process, with full, equal and meaningful participation of all Afghans, including women and girls and persons belonging to ethnic and religious groups and minorities, and including LGBTI persons, is required to ensure sustainable peace, stability and prosperity in Afghanistan.

Accountability for human rights violations and abuses is essential.

Given the present context, the role of UNAMA, OHCHR and the wider UN system in safeguarding human rights in Afghanistan is of the utmost importance.

High Commissioner,

What are the opportunities and challenges for UNAMA to positively influence developments in the field of rule of law?
