July 24, 2023
On Monday, President Gitanas Nausėda chaired a meeting of the State Defense Council to discuss the integration of Lithuania's power grid into the Continental European network, the national armed defense concept, long-term support for Ukraine, and issues related to the structure and development of the Lithuanian defense system required for establishing a division.
The Minister of Energy, Dainius Kreivys, and the CEO of Litgrid, Rokas Masiulis, outlined Lithuania's preparations to synchronize its electricity system with Continental Europe. The State Defense Council instructed the Government to reach a written agreement with the Governments of Latvia and Estonia on joint withdrawal of the three Baltic States from the Russian-controlled BRELL contract, with the final date for synchronization set for February 2025.
The State Defense Council approved a long-term support plan for Ukraine presented by the Minister of National Defense, Arvydas Anušauskas, which includes not only supplying weapons that Lithuania possesses but also delivering newly procured weaponry and providing training and rehabilitation for Ukrainian troops.
Changes to the national armed defense concept were approved in line with the new generation of regional defense plans agreed at the Vilnius NATO Summit, where collective rather than individual defense is projected from the early stages of a possible crisis.
The State Defense Council also discussed the need for military training grounds, stating that Lithuania needs an additional military training area for maneuvers by a brigade-size military unit.
