On July 17-23 fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled once to identify and escort aircraft of the Russian Federation flying in violation of flight rules in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.
On July 22 aircraft of the NATO Air Policing Detachment intercepted one TU-134 flying from mainland Russia to Kaliningrad and two SU-27s flying from and back to Kaliningrad through international airspace.
The TU-134 was flying with its onboard transponder switched on, maintained radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre but had not pre-filed the flight plan. The SU-27 had no flight plans, no radio communication and no onboard transponder signal.
