Yesterday, on 20 July, the European Union Foreign Affairs Council met in Brussels, focusing mainly on support for Ukraine, including on how to ensure long-term and sustainable aid for ensuring the security of Ukraine. In addition, EU-Türkiye relations were discussed, and a video meeting was held with the US Secretary of State Anthony J. Blinken. Estonia was represented by Aivo Orav, Permanent Representative of Estonia to the EU.
Orav stressed Estonia's comprehensive support to Ukraine, including the use of frozen Russian assets and sustainable support to the security of Ukraine. 'We are also stressing the need to establish a special tribunal to hold the Russian leadership accountable for the war crimes and crimes of aggression committed in Ukraine,' said Orav.
Relations between the European Union and Türkiye following the recent elections in Türkiye were also discussed. 'Estonia will continue to support the dialogue between the European Union and Türkiye, as the latter has an important role to play in ensuring the security of its region,' Orav said.
In a video meeting with the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, the international situation in general was discussed, including support for Ukraine, opposition to the Russian aggression, transatlantic relations, and relations with China. 'Estonia highly appreciates the support of the US to Ukraine and the cooperation between the European Union and the US. In addition, it is important to coordinate foreign policy towards China with the US,' said Orav.
