First Deputy Minister of Defence of the Czech Republic František Šulc and Minister of Strategic Industries of Ukraine Oleksandr Kamyshin signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Czech Ministry of Defence and Ukrainian Ministry of Strategic Industries at the beginning of July. The Memorandum paves the way for a closer cooperation in many specific areas, especially in repairs and maintenance of weapons, development of weapons and ammunition and modernisation and maintenance of armoured vehicles.

"Our objective is to build the groundwork for a sustained cooperation that will continue even after the war is over. One vein are the current supplies of military equipment, which we intend to continue, but it is equally important for the Czech industries to establish themselves in Ukraine and thus lay the foundation for a longterm cooperation," First Deputy Minister František Šulc said.

The sealed Memorandum of Understanding covers cooperation in many domains relevant in the present conflict, and, at the same time, in those with a high potential for the Czech defence industries in the years ahead. That primarily involves repairs and maintenance of weapons used by armed forces and security services of Ukraine and the Czech Republic as well as development of weapons and ammunition within the manufacturing capacities in both countries. A high premium is also placed on defence research and development and training of experts and specialist technical personnel.

Repairs and upgrades of main battle tanks and other armoured vehicles are going to represent another critical area of cooperation. On top of that, both parties seek to cooperate on the manufacturing of small arms and light weapons, small and big calibre ammunition and modernisation of fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft. Electronic warfare will also constitute an important field of cooperation.

The Memorandum of Understanding provides the framework for realisation of individual projects by Czech businesses with their Ukrainian counterparts - state enterprises in the purview of the Ministry of Strategic Industries.
