President Gitanas Nausėda met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of the Vilnius NATO Summit.
Gitanas Nausėda thanked Justin Trudeau for Canada's significant contribution to strengthening the security of the Baltic region by leading the NATO forward presence in Latvia and deploying troops to the NATO Force Integration Unit in Vilnius, and welcomed Canada's plans to expand its military presence in Latvia.
The President also welcomed Canada's decision to open an embassy in Vilnius, which will provide new opportunities to further strengthen cross-border ties and expand the bilateral agenda.
According to Gitanas Nausėda, Lithuania and Canada share a common value-based approach to Euro-Atlantic security issues, especially in terms of fully supporting Ukraine and coordinating international sanctions against Russia and Belarus. The President stressed that he particularly appreciated Canada's long-term military, financial and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. The Lithuanian leader also underlined Lithuania's support for initiatives to use the assets of the Russian regime and oligarchs for the reconstruction of Ukraine, and welcomed amendments to Canada's national legislation that would give it the authority to take such actions.
The President noted that Canada is a very important pillar of transatlantic bonds, without which the security of Europe is hard to imagine.
Gitanas Nausėda and Justin Trudeau also discussed the development of bilateral relations and welcomed the growing trade and economic ties between Lithuania and Canada. According to the President, there is potential to further strengthen them, especially in high added value sectors, food exports, life sciences, and agriculture. Lithuania also seeks to further boost security and defense cooperation by developing start-up ecosystem initiatives.
