President of the Republic of Lithuania
July 05, 2023
On Wednesday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with Polish President Andrzej Duda, who is on a state visit to Lithuania. The Lithuanian and Polish leaders discussed preparations for the NATO Summit in Vilnius, the security situation in the region and bilateral cooperation.
The Head of State pointed out that the strategic partnership between Lithuania and Poland has taken on a new meaning in the context of the ongoing brutal war in Europe.
"I appreciate our close cooperation, continuous coordination and joint efforts to ensure regional security. Lithuania and Poland are united not only by a common history, but also by a strong friendship based on trust, readiness to help each other and to face emerging threats together. As long as we stand side by side, we are strong and unbreakable," the President underlined.
The Lithuanian President stressed that the NATO Summit to be held next week in Vilnius is a very important event for Lithuania and Poland. According to Gitanas Nausėda, the security situation in the region remains tense, with a bloody Russian war still being waged in Ukraine, the intention to deploy a Russian nuclear weapon in Belarus, and the Wagner mercenaries and leaders in our neighborhood, and it is therefore necessary to reinforce the eastern flank in order to ensure that NATO's deterrence and forward defense is unbreakable.
"Another important item on the agenda of the upcoming NATO Summit is Ukraine's NATO future. We need to be clear that there are no other real security guarantees than NATO membership and Article 5. The Vilnius Summit is a great opportunity to stop repeating the same old rhetoric and to present a clear roadmap for the membership of Ukraine in NATO. Ukraine is not only a matter of interest for our region, but also for the Alliance as a whole," President Gitanas Nausėda stressed.
The Lithuanian and Polish leaders also discussed bilateral economic cooperation and joint infrastructure projects. Gitanas Nausėda stressed the need to accelerate the implementation of the joint strategic infrastructure projects of Poland and the Baltic States such as Rail Baltica and Via Baltica, as well as the Augustów-Alytus alternative route. According to the President, the road and rail corridors are crucial for military mobility, especially in the Suwałki corridor.
