Vice Minister of National Defence Žilvinas Tomkus took part at a meeting of Permanent Secretaries and Vice Ministers of Defence of the Baltic states in Latvia, Bauska, on July 3. They discussed security situation in the region, assistance to Ukraine, development of joint Baltic capability and the upcoming NATO Summit in Vilnius.
"The Baltic states are conducting active preparation for the NATO Summit where we will speak with one voice. We are united about our mutual goals - strengthening deterrence and defence on the eastern flank of NATO. We are also united about welcoming Sweden's NATO membership, a clear direction for Ukraine and its Euro-Atlantic ambitions, the rotational air defence model implementation, and more substantial defence investment," said Ž. Tomkus.
Vice Minister, Estonia's Permanent Secretary Kusti Salm and Latvia's State Secretary Janis Garison also visited a VAIROG EU ammunition factory established in Latvia. Representatives of the countries familiarized with the production line for different calibers of ammunition and discussed the challenges and opportunities facing the European Defence industry. The Baltic cooperation has been intensified in the areas of NATO Air Policing Mission, Navy, military exercises and officer and civilian training at the Baltic Defence College. The countries also synch force planning, coordinate joint procurement, hold joint exercises, courses, seminars, and conduct cooperation between separate services.
