Yesterday 21 June, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna was on a working visit to Poland, where he met with his Polish counterpart Zbigniew Rau.
The main topic of the meeting was the upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius in July. "We are expecting the Vilnius summit to give Ukraine clear messages on joining NATO," Tsahkna said. "Ukraine belongs in NATO and it is our duty to support them in their accession, as well as politically and militarily for as long as needed."
Minister Tsahkna also raised the need to establish a special tribunal to hold Russia's leadership accountable for the crime of aggression. "No one should go unpunished and Russia's ruling elite must be punished for the crimes committed in Ukraine," Tsahkna emphasised.
The meeting also covered the bilateral relations of Estonia and Poland. "The pressure of Russia's aggression on Ukraine has a great impact on Estonia and Poland as well. Now is the historic moment to reinforce European security," Tsahkna said. The minister thanked Poland for close defence cooperation and the country's contribution to collective defence.
The ministers highlighted the potential for closer economic relations. The two countries also plan to work together closely in Ukraine's reconstruction.
The minister also met with the representatives of the Scandinavian-Polish Chamber of Commerce and the German Marshall Fund, and in the evening, he welcomed guests at a Victory Day reception held at the Estonian embassy.
