On May 15-21 fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled twice to identify and escort aircraft of the Russian Federation flying in violation of flight rules in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

On May 18 NATO Air Policing fighter aircraft guarding the Baltic skies were scrambled to intercept two SU-27 flying from Kaliningrad and back through international airspace. The aircraft had no flight plan, their onboard transponders were off and the crews were not maintaining radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre.

On May NATO fighters aircraft were scramble to intercept one TU-134UBL flying in international airspace from Kaliningrad to mainland Russia. It has no pre-filed flight plan, the crew had the onboard transponder on and maintained radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre.
